Rolf Gruber is a supporting character in The Sound of Music. He is a 17-year-old Austrian telegram delivery boy who is romantically interested in Liesl, the eldest von Trapp daughter. Initially charming and sweet, Rolf sings the duet "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" with Liesl, portraying himself as worldly and protective.

However, as the Nazi influence grows in Austria, he becomes aligned with their ideology, ultimately choosing loyalty to the regime over his affection for Liesl. In a pivotal moment, he hesitates on alerting the Nazis to the von Trapp family's escape, showcasing his internal conflict and youthful susceptibility to propaganda.

Working in Northern Columbus with an outstanding group of individuals, we put on an outstanding outdoor performance of The Sound of Music at the Alum Creek Amphitheater.

Characteristically, Rolf has an intense inner turmoil that extends across not only the entirety of The Sound of Music, but following the contents of the musical as well. He is a shining example of the mass brainwashing and indoctrination of youth underneath the Nazi regime.

Theatrically, there are countless key elements that are important not only for the time this show was produced but for modern audiences as well. All of this, as well as performing this in an amphitheater with a live orchestra performing behind the actors meant there were many different - yet valuable - assets that needed to have an equal amount of support and attention.

The story of The Sound of Music is a gem of a show for modern audiences because of its timeless themes of love, resilience, and standing up against oppression. The story’s backdrop—the rise of Nazi Germany—serves as a reminder of the dangers of authoritarianism and the importance of moral courage in the face of injustice.
